Tuesday Photo Tip #6: Picture-Perfect by December
Holiday card ready: what to know before your session.
Every year, holiday cards land on fridges, mantels and bulletin boards, and some of them never come down. The best ones become a little time capsule: a snapshot of who your family was that year, who was tallest, or who was missing a tooth. With a bit of planning, your card can be one of the keepers. We’ve gathered our favorite tips for creating a holiday card worth framing, from choosing a theme to knowing which comes first: the photo or the card design.
TIPS FOR A HOLIDAY CARD WORTH KEEPING
Frame it and keep it. Your holiday card is more than a greeting; it’s a keepsake. Tuck each year’s card into a frame and display them together, and you’ll have a growing gallery of your family through the years.
Pick a theme. A theme makes your card instantly memorable. Strike a pose as carolers mid–“Deck the Halls,” or celebrate a family passion, whether that’s hiking boots, fishing poles, or matching team jerseys.
Book early, decide fast. The least stressful holiday cards come from early sessions and quick decisions. Schedule now, pick your favorite photo soon after, and you’ll be addressing envelopes while everyone else is still searching for a date.
Choose the photo first, then the card. Fall in love with your photo before you pick a design. If your favorite shot is horizontal, choose a horizontal card. Picking the card first could mean cropping, or passing on, the image you love most.
